How can progressives better communicate their message to working families? This was one of the questions raised at a roundtable discussion Monday hosted by the Center for American Progress (CAP).

One of the many ironies of Election 2016 is how a billionaire who just appointed the wealthiest cabinet in U.S. history managed to convince so many voters that his values were aligned with those of working Americans.

AFSCME’s very own director of research and collective bargaining, Steven Kreisberg, provided some answers.

“We have to live our values,” he said, “and that’s about commitment. AFSCME is a very diverse union, but we’re united around specific goals. We work together well. We know what unites us. Workers understand that what they’re seeking is a better life for themselves and their children.”

He continued, “Sometimes our progressive message gets muddled. We answer simple questions in five paragraphs. We need to find a simpler way to communicate with people. People are looking for someone who’s willing to fight for their values. It’s about living our values and having a clear idea of what those are.”

CAP is an independent policy institute that is committed to improving the lives of all Americans through progressive change.
