AFSCME Pres. Lee Saunders Slams Trump, Congressional Allies for ShutdownWashington, DC —
AFSCME Pres. Lee Saunders issued this statement following the Federal Government shutdown:
“On several occasions, President Trump has been a cheerleader for a government shutdown (‘Our country needs a good “shutdown,”’ he tweeted in May). Now, the White House and its congressional allies have gotten their wish – because they refused to engage on bipartisan solutions to important issues. They have refused to finalize a spending blueprint for this year and next. They have jeopardized the health care of nine million children from low-income families. They have left communities that need disaster relief in the lurch. They have held the Dreamers hostage, content to let them live with the fear that they will be removed from the only country they’ve ever called home.
“Instead, they’re choosing to shutter the doors of the federal government, a reckless and unnecessary move that will harm people across the country and create hardship for the hard-working people who provide public services. It’s time for those who control the government to actually govern. Federal employees and all public service workers wake up every day ready to do their work for the American people; right-wing politicians should do the same.”
