As votes were being tallied in several states and the outcome of key races – including for president and the U.S. Senate – remained undecided, AFSCME President Lee Saunders issued the following statement Wednesday:

“Nothing is more important at his moment for our nation and our democracy than protecting the right of every American who voted. That means ensuring that every eligible vote cast is counted, no matter how long it takes.

“In a democracy, the will of the people must prevail. The politicians have had their chance to speak and the voters are speaking now. Right now, there are certified local election officials in more than 3,000 counties across the country who are double checking the security of ballots

“AFSCME is deeply involved in the efforts to protect the vote in the days to come. I am confident that when this count is conducted in a fair and equitable manner, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will come out on top.”
