Members of AFSCME Local 2021 in Texas brought a full-court press to city officials, winning major improvements in pay, benefits and more.

In the budget that San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg and the city council passed this month, city employees saw their tireless efforts pay dividends. They won:

According to Roberta Vela, a 911 operator for the City of San Antonio, these wins provide much-needed relief for many families who are struggling to make ends meet.

“These cost-of-living adjustments, with the added bonus of not having to pay more for health insurance, make a big impact on many employees who were suffering because we can better provide for our families,” Vela said.

She added that as a 911 operator, “We experience PTSD, so the mental health care makes me feel like we’ve hit it big.”

As part of their campaign for “Fair Pay in SA Today,” AFSCME Local 2021 members distributed a petition that received over 350 signatures; met with city council members and the mayor before they voted on the budget; visited their co-workers’ worksites for one-on-one conversations; and held a rally to support their fair pay package, which included the priorities that made it into the budget.

Rose Hubbs, a paralegal for the San Antonio Police Department, said these wins were only possible because of AFSCME Local 2021 members.

“It isn’t that the city administration is just so generous that they just came up with it,” Hubbs said. “We went to them to advocate for these changes, our members worked together, and that’s how we all won. It’s important to understand how much we can do if we get more city employees to join together as union members.”
