Establish the William Lucy Labor Scholarship Fund

WHEREAS:
William Lucy has been an international advocate for working families and civil rights for nearly 60 years; and

WHEREAS:
His association with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., brought justice to AFSCME members in Memphis and across the nation; and

WHEREAS:
He has supported living wage jobs and education of our members; and

WHEREAS:

            He is a founder and the President of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists; and

WHEREAS:
He is an inspirational labor icon and mentor of the Next Wave program; and

WHEREAS:
He was a founder of the Free South Africa Movement; and

WHEREAS:
He has served as President and Vice President of Public Services International.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That William Lucy’s legacy be continued through the establishment of the William Lucy Labor Scholarship Fund; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
This endowed scholarship will be started with $50,000 in seed money from AFSCME and councils and locals may contribute to this fund.
