Building Community and Consumer Support for AFSCME Organizing Campaigns

WHEREAS:

As the largest union of public service workers, AFSCME represents those who provide the critical services that keep our democracy thriving. Our voice is truly the voice for a more caring, humane and civil American society; and

WHEREAS:

In most cases, the interests of AFSCME members and public service workers in general are closely aligned with the consumers of public services and the community at large. AFSCME's voice for greater funding and quality public services benefits our clients and the public we serve; and

WHEREAS:

Workers and consumers united are a powerful force in the face of those public officials who would sacrifice the public good for the benefit of a privileged few. Workers and consumers acting together can influence public opinion and move decision-makers in a way that workers alone can't; and

WHEREAS:

Many of our clients and consumers of our services are organized themselves, including students, the elderly, the disabled, victims of crime, and even those receiving public assistance. While we may have disagreements on certain issues, there is far more that we can agree on to advance our common goals; and

WHEREAS:

AFSCME members and public service workers in general are also members of their communities, and are active in their faiths, in political clubs and in their neighborhoods. Our welfare as workers — whether we earn a living wage, have affordable health insurance for our families and retirement security for our futures — affects the welfare of our communities, and is important to our religious and community leaders and political representatives.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That in all of AFSCME's campaigns, we examine the common interests we share with the consumers of our services, and consider strategies that will unite us in common purpose; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That our campaign plans, where appropriate, include an approach to these particular consumers to explore common interests, and that our campaign actions include joint activities; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:

That the most credible messengers in our campaigns are the workers themselves, who are organizing for greater voice and a better life, and can build strong bonds with consumers and the community.
