WHEREAS:
Effective communication is critical to the operation of any organization, including AFSCME; and
WHEREAS:
AFSCME has commissioned research surveys to improve the effectiveness of communications throughout the union; and
WHEREAS:
The International Union uses the results of research surveys to improve publications such as the Public Employee by including more articles which are interesting and relevant to AFSCME members; and
WHEREAS:
Other research helps the International Union to communicate breaking news to members, more effectively promote the union, our members and goals in the popular media and utilize new, emerging communications methods such as the World Wide Web.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That the International Union continue to place great importance on the effective and strategic communication of information not only to AFSCME members, but to the general public; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That the International Union, through its Public Affairs Department, provide strategic communications assistance to AFSCME leaders who are charged with the responsibility of communicating with our members by offering services including—but not limited to—spokesperson training, occupational-specific communication, paid media campaign consultation, and new media/new technology utilization; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:
That the AFSCME Public Affairs Department proactively communicate with all affiliates on a regular basis regarding ways to improve communications and regularly offer training and assistance to achieve this goal.
