WHEREAS:
The 1995 AFL-CIO Convention elected John Sweeney, President, Richard Trumka, Secretary-Treasurer, and Linda Chavez-Thompson, Executive Vice-President; and
WHEREAS:
This election was an unprecedented occasion for the labor movement and allowed labor to define and commit ourselves to a new direction; and
WHEREAS:
The New Voice campaign was launched by a committee of International Union Presidents, coordinated by AFSCME President Gerald McEntee; and
WHEREAS:
The new AFL-CIO officers have lived up to all the expectations articulated in their platform by:
- launching a vigorous new political education program
- establishing a new Organizing Department and Fund
- forcefully putting our case to the general public, with the theme "America Needs a Raise"
- and re-organizing the AFL-CIO structure; and
WHEREAS:
Linda Chavez-Thompson is a beloved fellow member of AFSCME, who has served public workers as the director of San Antonio Local 2399 and Texas Council 42, as an International Vice-President, and as a Judicial Panel Member.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That AFSCME congratulates President Sweeney, Secretary-Treasurer Trumka, and Executive Vice-President Chavez-Thompson on their election and accomplishments; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That we pledge our continuing and deep support for the new programs they have undertaken.
