WHEREAS:
AIDS has taken the lives of more than 300,000 persons; and
WHEREAS:
Persons are living longer with the virus than ever before; and
WHEREAS:
AIDS has been found to be affecting women and minorities in a disproportionate number; and
WHEREAS:
President Clinton signed the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resource Emergency Act that re-authorizes federal funding for the care of people with AIDS through the fiscal year 2000; and
WHEREAS:
The Names Project (AIDS Quilt) has shown dignity and respect for those dying of AIDS as well as a healing project for loved ones and friends; and
WHEREAS:
AFSCME has led the way and set the standards for other unions to follow in its fight against AIDS; and
WHEREAS:
AFSCME has taken a strong stand for the rights of HIV positive employees in the workplace and has implemented educational programs to help safeguard any members who might be exposed to HIV on the job.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That AFSCME participate fully in the Quilt display of October 1996; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That AFSCME continue its efforts to ensure fair, non-discriminatory treatment of HIV-positive members at the worksite; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:
That AFSCME continue its efforts to prevent the spread of AIDS and to support individuals with HIV through educational programs and by continuing to work with national AIDS organizations.
