WHEREAS:

In the state of Oregon, a group of misdirected citizens known as the Oregon Taxpayers United is now attempting to place on the ballot in November a "Right-to-Work Law" that if passed would make union security clauses in the public sector illegal; and

WHEREAS:

The same initiative would also make dues check-off illegal; and

WHEREAS:

The Oregon Taxpayers United are taking a direct shot at public employees and the membership of Council 75; and

WHEREAS:

The Oregon Taxpayers United wants to weaken the political clout of public employee unions so Council 75 will cease to be a force in fighting their anti-public employee initiatives; and

WHEREAS:

The Oregon Taxpayers United are tied in with national groups that will take this measure to other states should it pass in Oregon.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME International has made a substantial financial contribution to the fight to defeat this anti-public worker ballot measure, and will continue to assist in this fight; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That AFSCME councils and locals are strongly urged to support their brothers and sisters in Oregon by providing financial assistance as they can, since if this measure passes in Oregon, it will surely be taken up elsewhere.
