Organizing School Support Employees

WHEREAS:

AFSCME is a major force in public education, representing over 100,000 workers in elementary and secondary schools, in clerical, custodial, dietary, maintenance, nursing, paraprofessional, transportation and other occupations; and

WHEREAS:

The School Employee Advisory Committee has recommended that a priority be placed on organizing school support employees; and

WHEREAS:

The Department of Organizing and Field Services has worked with the School Employees Advisory Committee to design such an organizing program and literature; and

WHEREAS:

School employees seek and are entitled to unionize in a strong force that is free from the conflicting agendas that occur when school support employees unionize within a teacher union; and

WHEREAS:

AFSCME is best suited to meet the needs and wishes of school employees.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME make organizing school employees a major priority; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That the School Employees Advisory Committee and the Department of Organizing and Field Services develop and implement an aggressive plan of organizing.
