WHEREAS:
AFSCME has been a leader among unions in support of environmental issues and has been committed to protecting the environment; and
WHEREAS:
AFSCME has supported environmental laws and regulations that protect the air, water, and natural resources of our communities around the country; and
WHEREAS:
AFSCME has striven to educate its members and their families about environmental issues and legislation through bi-annual conferences on the environment.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That AFSCME continue to support environmental legislation that protects the air, water, and other natural resources of our nation and to fight attempts of the enemies of the environment to weaken or eliminate existing environmental laws and regulations; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That AFSCME continue its efforts to educate its members through publications and information about environmental issues, workplace environmentalism, community activism, and coalitions with environmental and community groups; and that this information be based on examples of successful action by AFSCME locals from around the country; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That AFSCME provide education to its members about environmental issues that specifically pertain to the various regions of the country and what effect proposed environmental legislation would have on those regions and communities; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:
That AFSCME maintain its leadership on the environmental front by offering environmental education necessary to activate its members in the various regions of the country so that they can effectively lobby for progressive legislation and perform meaningful community-based environmentalism.
