WHEREAS:

AFSCME has been a leader in the development of community action campaigns that augment organizing, negotiations, and job protection and benefit the community as a whole; and

WHEREAS:

Many AFSCME councils and locals have established their own community action committees that have successfully built a strong relationship with their communities through involvement in the issues and projects of the wider community; and

WHEREAS:

These community action committees have utilized the talents and hard work of their members to assist communities across the country; and

WHEREAS:

The results of the activities of these members has brought recognition from their communities of the significant role AFSCME members and public employees in general play in the daily life of the community.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME councils and locals continue to discover through member surveys and other means, those members who are already involved in community activities and obtain recognition for their contributions in community newsletters, local publications and at community recognition events; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That the International Union Community Action Department provide further instruction and materials to councils and locals on the ways they can use community projects to build and strengthen the union in the work place, and in their community; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:

That AFSCME continue its support for community action committees and councils and locals by providing on going assistance to members for setting up community action committees, and designing projects and other activities that benefit them and the communities in which they live.
