WHEREAS:
All across America, retired union members are joining retiree organizations chartered by their International Unions; and
WHEREAS:
The AFL-CIO recognizes the contributions that these retirees are making to the Labor Movement in such areas as political action and community services and wants to encourage all unions to organize retirees; and
WHEREAS:
The AFL-CIO has decided to formally incorporate union retirees into the House of Labor by establishing an affiliated retiree structure at all levels of the Federation; and
WHEREAS:
The structure starts with International Union retiree chapters and AFL-CIO at-large retiree clubs sending representatives to the Local Retiree Council — an affiliate of the Central Labor Council; and
WHEREAS:
The next level is the State Retiree Council, an affiliate of the State Federation of Labor comprising representatives elected by the Local Retiree Councils; and
WHEREAS:
This structure will emphasize the common goals of working and retired union members, helping to bring them together to promote the common good.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That AFSCME councils, locals, retiree chapters, and Subchapters be urged to actively support the building of the new AFL-CIO retiree structure and to encourage the full participation of their State Feds and CLCs.
