WHEREAS:
There is an ever growing need to strengthen local unions by increasing participation among members in all the activities of the union; and
WHEREAS:
Increased member participation has proven to be decisive in bargaining for a better contract, settling grievances faster and more effectively, organizing and recruiting non union employees and lobbying successfully for a bill in the legislature; and
WHEREAS:
Involving members in the solution of their own problems in the workplace, increases their sense of ownership and reaffirms the fact that they are the union; and
WHEREAS:
Local unions win become more effective vehicles for representation and advocacy when more people are involved and available to help.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
AFSCME commits itself to conduct an extensive educational campaign to promote the advantages of the organizing model among its affiliates; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That the Education Department develop appropriate training materials to help AFSCME leadership and staff both to understand and to implement the organizing model in local unions.
