1991 Reapportionment

WHEREAS:

The results of the 1990 elections will strongly impact the 1991 reapportionment process; and

WHEREAS:

The reapportionment process will determine the state legislative and congressional districts for the next 10 years; and

WHEREAS:

States in which AFSCME has a large membership are scheduled to lose from 1 to 3 congressional seats; and

WHEREAS:

Other states of importance to AFSCME will gain anywhere from 1 to 5 congressional seats; and

WHEREAS:

It is of extreme importance that AFSCME play a significant role in the 1990 elections so that the results of the 1991 reapportionment will provide a favorable climate in which AFSCME can achieve its political and organizational goals.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That the 29th International Convention urge all AFSCME members to exercise their right to vote in the 1990 elections; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That each council and local encourage membership participation in the political process; educate their members on the specific elections in their areas; and stress the importance of the 1990 elections because of their impact on the 1991 reapportionment process.
