Parity for Non-profit Workers

Resolution No. 53
29th International Convention
June 25-29, 1990
Miami, FL

WHEREAS:

AFSCME has members in the public sector, and the private non-profit sector; and

WHEREAS:

Workers in the private non-profit sector do not have parity in wages or benefits with public sector workers; and

WHEREAS:

Public and non-profit AFSCME members must be united, and fight together to avoid the divisions that management tries to impose on us; and

WHEREAS:

As workers in the private non-profit sector we are also members of AFSCME; and

WHEREAS:

Workers in the private non-profit sector have an extremely high burnout and turnover rate due to the lack of adequate salaries, and lack of staff; and

WHEREAS:

If private non-profit workers were given parity, the government contracting out would only be used when services are not available in the public sector.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That AFSCME will fight for parity in wages and benefits for AFSCME-represented private non-profit workers; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That AFSCME will seek to protect AFSCME-represented private non-profit workers when fighting contracting out; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:

All contracts be based on prevailing wages of public employees.
