WHEREAS:
Jobs With Justice (JWJ) is a nationwide support network for workers' rights. It is a coalition of labor unions; religious, civil rights, and women's organizations; AFL-CIO state and central labor bodies; community groups; elected officials and other citizens, working together to build unity and support for American working people; and
WHEREAS:
The three basic principles of JWJ are employment security, a decent standard of living for all American workers, and the right to organize; and
WHEREAS:
Employers' attacks on these basic worker rights are increasing; and American workers' rights to organize a union and to bargain collectively, fundamental to our laws and way of life, are being deeply eroded by the greatest management resistance in 50 years; and
WHEREAS:
Many public sector workers are denied the right to organize and to bargain outright. This denial is intolerable in a democratic society that professes a belief in the right of free association; and
WHEREAS:
JWJ coalitions have been built in cities and states around the country in support of concrete battles for labor rights.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That AFSCME continue to support the efforts of JWJ to build grassroots coalitions around the country; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That this 29th International Convention urges all AFSCME affiliates to adopt the JWJ campaign as an ongoing union program and carry this program to every member and ally across the country.
