WHEREAS:
Recreational services are a vital need for people in Los Angeles. Let it be resolved that AFSCME delegates at the 29th International Convention adopt this resolution to send a message to Mayor Bradley and the City Council of Los Angeles; and
WHEREAS:
The City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks services over three million people throughout the metropolitan area in recreation, social, human and other services; and
WHEREAS:
AFSCME Local 901, the recreation unit, leads in daily forces to provide services from professional recreators; and
WHEREAS:
The City of Los Angeles in 1988 started the Urban Impact Program to revitalize recreation, social, physical and cultural programs in the inner city. Over ten million dollars was spent on improving programs, upgrading facilities, introducing Park Rangers Program for safety and skills training for recreation staff.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
That the AFSCME International Executive Board write a letter of support to the Mayor of Los Angeles and City Council encouraging financial support for the Urban Impact Program, due to the positive results the Urban Impact Program provided for impacted people.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That AFSCME encourages other large cities to investigate and research the Urban Impact Program in Los Angeles and to implement similar programs in their cities.
