WHEREAS:

Attempts to portray public employees and public services as ineffective and inefficient have continued and even increased during the years of the Reagan Administration; and

WHEREAS:

There is a need to ensure that the general public understands the vital link between the quality of life in their local community and the delivery of state and local government services; and

WHEREAS:

AFSCME has for several years been a leader in public education through the use of television and radio advertising; and

WHEREAS:

The need to continue and expand these types of programs has never been greater.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

That the International Union continue to develop a national public education campaign to defend public services through the use of television and radio advertising; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:

That the International Union work with AFSCME councils and local unions to address pressing public education problems relating to tax initiatives, organizing the unorganized, pay equity, and numerous other local issues.
